About Us

At Kamal Kullu Shawls, we are proud to continue the rich legacy of one of Himachal Pradesh’s most cherished handicrafts – the Kullu Shawl. Rooted in the cultural heritage of the Kullu Valley, our shawls represent the artistry, tradition, and spirit of the region.

The history of the Kullu Shawl dates back centuries, originally woven by the indigenous Kullvi people in plain, simple designs. The art evolved in the early 1940s with the arrival of skilled craftsmen from Bushahar, who introduced intricate geometric patterns and vibrant color combinations that have now become iconic.

About Kullu Shawls

Origin and History: Kullu Shawls are traditional woolen shawls crafted in Kullu, India. Initially, the indigenous Kullvi people wove plain shawls. After the arrival of craftsmen from Bushahar in the early 1940s, more intricate geometrical patterns and vibrant colors became popular.

Materials Used

  • Pashmina wool (from the snow goat)
  • Yak wool
  • Rabbit wool
  • Sheep wool
  • Angora wool (soft and lightweight)

How Kullu Shawls Are Made

  • Setting Up the Warp: Wool is extracted from animals and spun into thread cones, unwound, threaded through wire heddles, and rolled onto a warping drum.
  • Mounting the Warp: The prepared warp is mounted onto a frame loom.
  • Weaving the Pattern: Traditional embroidered artwork techniques are used to weave geometrical patterns.
  • Finishing the Shawl: Tassels are tied to ends or woven strips stitched to borders.
  • Steaming and Ironing: Shawls are steamed and ironed on large rollers to finish.

Uses of Kullu Shawls

  • Worn as warm outerwear during winters
  • Used for special occasions and ceremonies
  • Draped as wraps or traditional Chadars
  • Ideal for outdoor gatherings, rituals, and pilgrimages
